Artists often explore ideas related to place. In this selection of works from the MacKenzie Art Gallery, artists reflect on the experience of their urban or rural landscape or their reactions to it. Often, the selected artists will use the place where they live as a springboard to metaphorically speak of greater issues like time, technology and change. They may modify or manipulate images of their local environments to suggest ideas related to spirituality, fear and despair, freedom and joy, hope or lack of hope, peacefulness and chaos. Artists may suggest an essence or a feeling for their space. Through their work we discover that where we live can have a huge impact upon our lives and the choices we make.
