Marie Lannoo - Listen to the Artist Within You

I started abstractly and then my studio practice demanded that I investigate narrative and personal narrative. And I also pushed that into historical narrative which is where the painting Whatever Happened to the Goebbels’ Family comes from. And then that’s what led me back into abstraction. So I always seem to be doing these things in kind of backwards ways, but in fact they’re not backwards at all. They’re absolutely always leading me in the right direction. And so as an artist you really have to be mindful of that, and you must listen to yourself, you must listen to the artist in you telling you where to go and what to do. Even if at the time that you do these things they seem like completely unproductive tangents. And I don’t think that any tangential approach in a working career is a bad one. It may at the time seem like you’re wandering aimlessly, but experience has taught me that those aimless wanderings in fact may be the most productive times that you do have and in fact absolutely are leading you in the right direction.
