There are in fact in the new work, which is very high gloss acrylic paint, what happens now is there’s presence through absence. And by that I mean although there are no figures in the paintings, the high gloss surfaces are really, really reflective and so you can see yourself if you’re standing in front of them, you can see whoever you’re with and the entire environment that that painting is housed in. So they may be more representational than the works that had figurative content in them. I think that where you live and the place where you come from very much informs the type of colour that one uses in one’s work. So for example living on the prairies we are very lucky that we live in a place where there is almost infinite space, and that it is through that huge dimension of space that we are able to see colour. And colour here, there is definitely a clarity to it that, for example, you wouldn’t find in a major urban centre. And there’s a lot of reasons for that. First of all tons of buildings that shadow everything and block one’s view. There’s a lot more pollution in places like that. So driving out on the prairie, taking a drive between Saskatoon and Regina, we are treated to this clarity of transparent, not only space, but also colour. And I think that that is very much a part of my work.
