The year that I became a teacher of art I also enrolled in the Baha’i faith, and the spiritual teachings inspired me a lot with universal principles. Not that the Baha’i faith tells you how to be an artist, but I was inspired by principles like unity through diversity. And so I tried to show the students work from all kinds of cultures - a diverse range. And then I tried to point out how their own work was reflecting in a primitive or an early way, it was reflecting some of the qualities that were universal ones. And that really inspired them to know that they could just pick up a brush and do something and that it would overlap these powerful principles. So that plus my genuine love for the students…I really did, I miss them terribly since I haven’t been teaching for 20 years now and I really miss that contact with young people. In some ways I enjoy young people more than older people. I shouldn’t say that because I am an older person, but I like their enthusiasm and their innocence and their purity of spirit. I hope that they still have it.
