Rudolf Arnheim - he is a writer. He writes on photography and painting. He is a psychologist and he wrote a book called The Power of the Centre and he said that people, they have a soul and it aspires to infinity. But at the same time the world is so big that it scares us so we want to define it. So man has invented the grid system, the Cartesian grid (vertical/horizontal) and we are slaves to it. Our streets our maps, everything are vertical. It is important, but he said this never satisfies the soul because the soul longs for transcendence, and so he says that the spiral is very important. And so he went through the history of art and he showed how the vertical/horizontal works and how in every painting you could imagine or actually plot…you could draw the line of where the spiral is. And so I started looking at my work and I realized that I too was unconsciously doing that. Every painting has a spiral motion in it as well as very strict vertical/horizontal compositional arrangement.
