Mankind has had to invent measurements. Cities are laid out; maps are made all on the basis of a grid system, vertical/horizontal. And the reason that we have done that is because the universe is so huge that we can’t understand it and it scares us. So in order to limit it we keep inventing things to measure it, or to contain it, or to understand it. And one way of containing it was to make this four-sided rectangle which has this grid system. So in a painting you are always aware of the grid system - vertical/horizontal. And of course when you have a diagonal you have an element of dynamism, because as soon as you have a diagonal you have a greater movement. When you have the vertical - there is a strong vertical feeling here. It is echoed by this, and it is echoed by that. But it’s a strong vertical feeling and it’s helped by the strong horizontal. So you can get a situation of rest or a static quality.
