Susan Shantz - Hibernaculum Title

The title Hibernaculum?  I think it came from…it’s literally the name they give to a snake nest, so where snakes would hibernate, and then all the little baby snakes come out in the spring.  Probably for me it came a bit more from hibernation and maybe it’s related to that process, a long hibernation process of making something before the ideas are ready to come out.  And maybe physically the form, particularly of the wall.  It’s a bit like a lair, it’s like a space you entered behind.  And that wall I constructed so there was kind of a narrow corridor to enter it and it widened out into the corner and narrowed again at the end.  So it had a kind of sense of containment or privacy in that space.  Titles can be difficult to come up with, where they actually encapsulate the kind of associations you want to have in a piece without being too literal or giving it away completely.  I like something that’s a bit evocative of what I’m suggesting, but is also open to interpretation.
